In our witness to a lost world, we frequently encounter a common objection: the rejection of the Gospel message due to the poor testimonies of hypocritical Christians. While the failure of believers to live up to their calling is deeply regrettable, using it as a basis for rejecting the gospel is logically flawed. It is a classic genetic fallacy, dismissing the objective truth of a claim based solely on the flawed messenger delivering it.

The reality is that another person’s hypocrisy is completely irrelevant to an individual’s eternal destiny.

The True Cause of Condemnation

The Scriptures are emphatically clear regarding the root cause of damnation:

It is not the poor behavior of others, but the rejection of the truth that condemns a soul (2 Thessalonians 2:10-12).
The person being witnessed to must understand that their own unbelief is the source of their damnation (John 16:9; Revelation 21:8).
Consequently, Christians possess an absolute, uncompromising obligation to act as faithful stewards of the truth (1 Corinthians 4:1; 2 Corinthians 1:18; 3 John 1:8).

The World’s Misunderstanding of Charity

Unbelievers frequently label bold, truth-telling Christians as hateful, uncharitable, and unlike Christ. They operate under a secular definition of love that equates compassion with the total affirmation of sin.

However, when the Apostle Paul details the pinnacle of Christian virtue in 1 Corinthians 13, he provides an objective standard for “charity.” Among the fifteen specific attributes of true biblical love, two stand out in stark contrast to the modern cultural narrative:

Charity “rejoiceth not in iniquity.“
Charity “rejoiceth in the truth.“

This is highly illustrative. Believers are often accused of lacking charity precisely when they are exercising it most faithfully—by preaching the gospel and citing Scripture. Defending and contending for the truth is not a violation of love; it is its primary objective. The lost culture simply remains ignorant of what constitutes genuine charity.

Our Obligation to the Truth

This reality should provide immense solace to the steadfast believer. The world will not always welcome our witness with open arms. Yet, Jesus Christ, who is the Truth incarnate (John 14:6), reminded us that the world’s hostility is ultimately directed at Him first and foremost (John 7:7).

While we are instructed to give an answer with meekness and fear (1 Peter 3:15) and to let our speech be alway with grace (Colossians 4:6), our paramount duty remains clear. We must be valiant for the truth. The deliverance of objective, biblical truth is our highest obligation, even when the lost world misinterprets our charity as hostility.
