The Three-and-a-Half-Year Turning Point: The Antichrist Enters the Temple of God and Declares Himself to Be God
The midpoint of the seven-year tribulation is the decisive turning point in the entire end-time order. During the first three and a half years, the Antichrist will still function primarily under the image of a peacemaker, a restorer of order, and a guardian of covenantal stability; but at the midpoint, every disguise will be torn away. Daniel 9:27 says that he will “cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease”; 2 Thessalonians 2:4 says that he will “sit in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God”; Daniel 11:36 further describes how he shall “exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god.”
This is what the Lord Jesus refers to in Matthew 24:15 as “the abomination of desolation” standing in the “holy place.” Once this occurs, it becomes clear that all the peace, miracles, integration, governance, and religious cooperation that the world had previously celebrated were simply the means by which the earth was being brought into a final system of idolatry. At that moment, the Third Temple ceases to be merely a symbol of national and religious hope and becomes the public site of open blasphemy against the true God.
At the same time, the mark of the beast will fully reveal its true nature. It is not essentially an economic mechanism, but a public sign of loyalty to the Antichrist. To receive the mark is not merely to gain the ability to buy or sell, but to accept spiritually the authority of the beast. To refuse the mark is not just to reject a worldly convenience, but to break with the entire beast-system and thereby face persecution and even martyrdom.
Thus, the final battle of the end times is not technological, but worshipful. It is not chiefly about who controls the most efficient method of payment, but about who is worthy of humanity’s final allegiance. When the Antichrist sits in the temple of God and declares himself to be God, the hidden rebellion of all human history comes into concentrated manifestation: man does not want the true God; man wants a false god who can be politicized, institutionalized, and globalized.
