In recent decades, the modern nation of Israel has stood as one of the most remarkable geopolitical developments in human history. After nearly two thousand years of dispersion, the Jewish people have returned to their ancestral homeland. For many, this regathering is seen as the direct fulfillment of biblical prophecy. But a careful examination of Scripture reveals a critical distinction: Israel has indeed been regathered, but in unbelief.
The Bible speaks of two distinct regatherings of Israel. One is in unbelief, preparing the nation for a time of judgment; the other is in faith, resulting in national restoration and blessing under the reign of the Messiah.
A Regathering in Unbelief
The prophet Ezekiel gives one of the clearest pictures of this initial regathering:
“And I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land.” (Ezekiel 36:24)
At first glance, this appears to describe a spiritual restoration—but the context shows otherwise. The regathering occurs before the cleansing:
“Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you.” (Ezekiel 36:25)
Notice the order: first, they are brought back into the land; then, they are spiritually renewed. This implies a return that precedes repentance, a regathering in unbelief.
Ezekiel 37 reinforces this truth through the vision of the valley of dry bones. The bones come together, are covered with flesh, yet initially have no breath in them:
“And when I beheld, lo, the sinews and the flesh came up upon them, and the skin covered them above: but there was no breath in them.” (Ezekiel 37:8)
Life comes later. The physical restoration precedes the spiritual one.
The Present Condition of Israel
Today, the majority of Israel remains in rejection of Jesus Christ as Messiah. While there is a faithful remnant, the nation as a whole is not walking in covenant obedience or New Testament faith.
The Apostle Paul speaks directly to this condition:
“For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.” (Romans 11:25)
Israel’s current state is one of partial blindness—not permanent rejection, but temporary unbelief. This aligns perfectly with the idea of a regathering that has occurred before national conversion.
A Future Regathering in Faith
Scripture is clear that Israel’s story does not end in unbelief. There is coming a day when the nation will turn to Christ:
“And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:” (Romans 11:26)
This future turning is described vividly in Zechariah:
“They shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him…” (Zechariah 12:10)
This is not political restoration, it is spiritual awakening. It is repentance. It is recognition of the true Messiah.
Only after this will Israel experience the full blessings promised in the covenants.
Why This Matters
Understanding that Israel is currently regathered in unbelief guards us from two extremes.
First, it prevents us from assuming that everything the modern state of Israel does is divinely sanctioned. The Bible does not teach blind endorsement, it teaches prophetic clarity for this nation.
Second, it protects us from replacement theology, which wrongly claims that God is finished with Israel. The same Scriptures that speak of Israel’s present blindness also promise her future restoration.
God is not done with Israel, but neither is Israel yet what she will be.
Conclusion
The regathering of Israel is real. It is significant. It is prophetic. It occurred in part in 1948.
But it is not yet complete.
Israel has been brought back to the land, but not yet back to the Lord.
That day is coming. And when it does, it will not be subtle. It will be a national turning, a spiritual awakening, and the fulfillment of God’s promises in full to His earthly people
Until then, we recognize the present reality:
Israel is regathered, but in unbelief.
